A few satsuki and one for ID

Here's a few satsuki in flower, more stock plants then bonsai and one that had no label and needs identifying. My best guess is Gyoten, maybe someone can confirm or deny that for me

Nice stock, I had a look in Robert Z. Callaham's 'Satsuki Azaleas for Bonsai and Azalea enthusiasts', it might be Gyoten...they do seem to have less wavy petals though?

Could also be a sport of Gyoten, Taiho, Ai No Hikari?

I would be very interested to know, did it come from a bonsai supplier or regular nursery?

Arthur might chime in maybe?

G'day Scott, the flowers are a bit wavy in real life. It came from John Coles Nursery, a regular nursery but the place we get our satsuki from. I haven't seen any Gyoten there but this was an old plant from 'out the back' and i do remember Arthur saying that it used to be available there. He will hopefully see this sometime. If not I will be taking it out to his place for our AGM next weekend so I'll let you know what he thinks.

Got them from the same place as yours as well and same as you there were no labels in them when I got them. Girls on checkout had no idea what they were either.

No worries Graeme, I'll take it out to Arthurs on the weekend and see if he can ID it then I'll post here. Are you a former west ozzie then? It is making some great patterns now, here's a pic from this morning...

Hi Damian, yes it does but I'm pretty sure Bunka has a much larger flower, these are quite small. It also looks alot like Kozan and Arthur has said that he thinks it may even be Kozan but I'm not 100% convinced as google searching shows that there is actually a satsuki variety called Soft Touch with a salmon pink flower. Its a very pretty thing but it does burn easily.

Ok, so I took my azalea out to Arthurs for the satsuki society AGM and it turns out to be called 'Kikusui', Arthur has one and they are the same. He also has Gyoten and we compared them. The Gyoten flower is a much pinker base while the Kikusui is whiter. Though kikusui is a very beautiful plant I was just a little dissapointed as i had hoped for it to be Gyoten as I had been looking it up and reading that it is a great variety, looking at pics etc. However, as luck would have it Arthur had a Gyoten up for sale so here is some pics of my new Gyoten ...

Nice new tree! and good work on the identification!

I hope Arthur is building up his stock for the AABC convention, Im keen to get as many different Satsuki as I can so the east side of Aus can have access to all of that the variety too!

Hi Scott, Yes he is, there should be quite a bit by then. There was infact one eastern state's member who came along to our AGM and left with a hand luggage full of plants and a big smile
