New Maple

Hi ausbonsai community
I just bought two new maples when i coming back home from the central coast, as you can see ones a Japanese maple and the other is a red maple aswel as a juniper. I would like to know, should i cut back the root system when i pot these up or just leave them to get us to the climate etc, all help would be great thanks.

It all depends on what size, style you have in mind for them.
The juniper looks like it is in one of those tiny starter pots. It would probably be a good idea to slip pot it (just tip out the rootball and pot it into a larger pot without disturbing the roots) to make it easier to look after and to let it grow on a little.
The maples look like they are in larger pots and can stay in them until winter. I wouldn't repot trees at this time of year and especially wouldn't be trimming roots now while they are trying to grow.
However I would wait until late winter then bare root all of them so you can check and improve the rootage and get them into your own potting mix so you can look after them properly.
As they are all so young yet there is no point in talking about design and styling until they've grown a bit.

Slip poot the Juni to a larger pot, aned the maples just lookafter them till wither and they go dormant. Then you can work on the roots of them safely

they cost me $8 and from bonsai enviroment at vinyard, sorry i might have spelt that wrong.

Well iv potted them up in my pots now, lets hope they like their move.

does anyone know how much sun i should give them, iv been giving them about 4 hours of sun in the afternoon and about 3-5 hours of filtered sunlight

Hi Whereswally, At the age those trees are, you'd be best putting them somewhere comfortable for a few years and not terrorising the roots too much. Maples will grow quite quickly if you keep them protected from harsh sun.

Go visit your auntie and dig up her old pittosporum or a weed olive if you'd like to sink your secateurs into something.

And actually Bretts is organising a olive dig sometime soon and i plan on going with him to find myself a nice olive bonsai up.
