Re: How to grow good bonsai stock like the Japanese nurseries
This gem of a JBP came back from a Japan trip two years ago - from a shohin nursery in Tokyo.
Its trunk and branch structure are astounding when you look at it up close - nothing like ive ever seen in Australia.

How exactly did you get it into the country? I'd love to get a few in myself....

I am guessing it is just a photo of a tree in japan, not brought back, though if it is, i would also be interested in how!

Let's pretend we didn't hear this, but remind everyone that there is a reason why we have quarantine!

I doubt anyone would be so lucky nowdays with the level of screening that goes on. If you do manage to succeed share but with caution... you never know who may hear/see.

Wow, looks like I might have to visit the nursery to get some young junipers. I'm certainly interested in trying this. Thanks steven for the link in your viewtopic.php?f=138&t=1321 link. I probably wouldn't have found this. Maybe we need more tutorial stickies?

Re: How to grow good bonsai stock like the Japanese nurseries
I have been updating my links page on my blog and came across the following site.
Mini y Shohin Bonsai
It is a blog run by jesus cuevas who i am pretty sure also studied at Taisho-en. Its an interesting read in regards to this thread as he is using and documenting the techniques many of the Japanese shohin and mame nurseries use to create stock. Its a fast and easy way to develope good trees in a short time frame. Most species are suitable.
I remembered a fair few people started twisty stock of junipers and natives, hopefully this site is a bit of a catalist to get some update pics posted of the trees people have been growing in this way since this thread was started.
Any way,
Enjoy.
Joe.

Re: How to grow good bonsai stock like the Japanese nurseries
Funny you should mention this again Jow.
I was only looking at all mine last weekend, and some are going strong and developing well.
I have 5 Sargeants in a large box and 2 of them have kicked on real well the last year, but the other 3 are only just starting to put on good growth now after a full year in the pot
. Ahh well No hurry
Another 2 I put in the ground last year and both have gone on real well since. Should have put all 7 in the ground in the first place
I will get updated pics this week if I can
