+Hi Antonio
I have used this method for over a year and I haven’t found any dead roots yet.
They are tightly doweled in and the cambium is joined
I normally only do one or two roots, and as I had only had one original root on each I had plenty of room for grafting.
I can’t see any difference in this method and the toothpick method if the root dies then there’s a good chance that new roots will form around this area.
If you have a good root why use a toothpick.

Antonio
I live in Sydney, and i would try this on any tree that needs it,I have tried Maples and Figs, Elm.
when reducing roots that are healthy and are 4 to 6 mm below the cambium.
i like to select a drill slightly smaller and taper the hole by moving the drill around, this gives a good fit and lets the cambium join.

Hi antonio
I hope it goes well for you, Its easy if you have a good set of drills.
I finish another Elm today and I'm taking photos so I will remember which roots I've done.

+Hi Baturb
If you read this post through from the beginning you will get a fair idea of grafting a root, if you don’t understand anything post a question.
I have never used the toothpick method so I can’t help you, if you type in (toothpick) in Search you will get all the information that you want.

looking at the pics, you used the roots cutting a v grove in them then placed another cutting on top then planting it all together, is this correct? I read up on the toothpick method, looks and sounds easy enough for me to have a go at it in the near future

+In the beginning the elm was give to me to cut the middle out of the stump and screw together.
Look up V-cut in search and you will under stand.
The roots for grafting have the ends prepared as they are shown (roots on a blue lid) ends cut back just below cambium a drill is selected 0.2mm below the size of the prepared root end and when you have drilled the hole deep enough you revolve power drill slightly, this produces a tapered hole that the root will be pushed into if the cambium doesn’t meet you drill or cut a bit more till it dose.
The idea is to Jamb them in tight so they can’t move when repotting and I use a grafting wax to seal around the root, you could use honey.

When I did this root grafting I took a liking to the stump as the bottom looked like it would make a good turtle back, every body knows that roots don’t grow upside down.
