Air layering a Casuarina

Just recently there was a question asked of how big an air layer can be?. There were many answers with very large ones being successful.

I have tried and succeeded, with both sizes. This time though it is the first time I have tried a Casuarina, although friends have with success.
So I thought to try one of one and a half inches or 4cm in diameter. I thought to post here so if it fails or not we can all see. As this is the optimum season for natives,
it should be fine.

Hey Pup,

Thanks for posting this, I look forward to seeing how it goes. I have posed the question in the past & often wondered when I see some fantastic bit of a whole tree that would make a beautiful bonsai. Now I get to find out & see it happen (cheering smiley smiley)

That will be a beaut base to build a tree on if all goes well.

Was wondering if there is an ideal season to do an air layer and is the timing the same for all natives.

Have a 1 metre tall bottle brush and was wanting to do an air layer. Would it be to much of a shock to the tree to repot and air layer and if so which would you sugest first ?

Any idea how long it would take to expect to see sufficent roots to detach the top from the parent tree ?

Fiona, I think this will be as is till next summer so I can be sure, but if it show prolific growth I will have a look at it .
Your Bottle brush can be done now, then when you have your air layer successfully cut of re pot. Or re pot and wait 3 months, and then do it.

Fiona, I have not obtained them yet. I have just started it today. What you saw was the part I cut off the original tree, with roots attached.

WooF Woof, it is just sitting in fine akadama it is in the fig house that is very humid, so it should be OK it will always be moist. Yes it will be interesting, Alf had no problems with them, so I should think it should be OK.

That's a great looking bit of She Oak material to be working with, and if your layer succeeds it will make for a great little tree in short time. I have had some success in layering She Oaks, but my care/watering leaves much to be desired compared to yours, so I can see no reason yours won't take.

Do you know the exact species of this one?

G,day Fly this is Allocasuarina fraseriana, a West Australian species. It is part of the Casuarina for virtuals when I pruned it ready to start work on, this piece was on the side with the roots attached. So I thought let us see what happens. Looking at it on Sunday I thought why not so here we are.
Thank you for the encouragement young man, but I do believe you give them more than that.
What I would like to ask, like Fiona, what was the time frame?.

This is an up date on the Allocasuarina air layer, I did in December last year, on the 6th to be exact.
It is the first time I have tried this approach on a Casuarina.
Apart from the OH bugger moment, of the picture after the cut, you will also notice that it is one sided. It seems to have breached the gap which is rather large. I have pasted the area after I cut it off so hopefully it will send out roots, there also.

I re potted and the bottom half, it was given the NT treatment. You never,never know if you, never,never ( go ) try. We will have patience and wait, remember I did the same thing with a Lilly pilly.

With spring I expect a massive growth spurt so the lower first branch should thicken up.
