its still growing in all directions .I have set 4 air layers on the mid section

and 32 inarch grafts on the mid to lower sections of the original trunks over the few months following the top operation .

.In a couple of instances a single branch has been double grafted /layered onto 2 seperate trunks . The remaining branches will be Inarched onto the fused top once it has been severed from the main trees .Roots are progressing inside the top layer apart from the OH BUGGER trunk which has calloused and should sprout roots in the next growing season .If not it will become a long shari for future carving . The inarch grafts have taken nicely {1 casualty out of 32} however they will remain tied with grafting tape over winter as we get some serious winds up here.Cheers Alpineart

Hi mate i'll correct you if i may ."Black flowerpot pine" Alpineus Constructus Grows in big black pots and has little black pots up the trunk .Cheers

Hi Matt , i expect to Inarch graft and layer numerous branches and trunks onto the main fused tree over the next 3-5 years , then i may have a good black pine to work with . I certainly wont be hacking and chopping this one .Cheers

Well its time to take the layers off as the roots have began to come out of the bottom of the pots , no good wasting time if they grow they grow

We Have Fushion .These main trunks have fused together nicely

and the younger plants introduced earlier have also fused

, not completely but i'm itching to continue to push these to their limits

.A few padded restraints were placed around the lower section to continue the hold the fused sections together , i certainly dont want this coming apart .I have contemplated screwing it together with stainless steel screws but the wires will do the job nicely . All of the layers taken off several months ago have survived so they too will be fused/ inarched to the lower section .That will mean 10-12 trunks fused and working together , hopefully to produce a HUGE base with incredible taper .Looking forward to the day i fell the top out of this one . It currently stands 1m high and the fused base is around 65mm , when the little fused pines start pumping it should explode outwards in the lower 1/3 of the trunk .Cheers Alpineart

Really interesting work alpine, I very much like to see your innovation in this and commitment to a long term project. In years to come your pine will be unique in having a fluted trunk and buttress! Ash

Hi Ash , i most certainly will be something unique , if it survives .I have just found 2 small curl grubs in the basket , now do i risk an emergency repot or confidor pesticide .Awaiting some expert advice from a Hort in the know , either way i have to take some serious action .Cheers Alpine

when I had Curls grubs and knew they were there, I used to soak in water for an hour or so to drown the buggers

Hi Ken , its a bit hard to soak a layer thats over 2m up in the air .I checked the Yates site and they don't recommend using Confidor in pots .So i "Bit the Bullet" and severed it off and are doing a repot into Scoria , guarrantee the little buggers wont want to play in that . .Will soak the trunk for a few hours to hopefully drown any pests that maybe inside unseen. Since it has been removed, i decided now that its off i will add a couple more trunks to the base and then it can sink or swim so too speak .Cheers Alpine
