Hi im new and need some advice on a Japenese maple

Post by Sahara »

Hey guys im Sahara from melbourne..have had a bonsai now for 7 years a big fat fig and this last week kind of gone crazy as my bf bought another for valentines, we went out this weekend and bought 3 more then 3 eysetrday as this lady was selling them as she was moving and they were a great deal.
anyway i got this jappenese maple from her for 40 dollar it 10 years old, but it need some care and attention is very sturdy but someone has been having a go at the leaves, she said that they went away for 3 weeks and were not looked after and hence the leaves seem a little sick. i have checked the leaves and there are some black mark on them looks a little like mould but is not. i founf some very very timny vlack mites on it about 7 onthe whole plant so thye are now gonr and a white spider who made a home between two leaves who is not also gone but id like to know wat to do to help it health.
i have attched some pics of the plant.

Looks OK to me but needs a repot into a good bonsai mix in early spring to give it more vigour.

hi sahara what i mean is keep watering it normally and every 2 weeks fertalize it and when you repot it at end of winter because thats when buds will be swelling
use a good quality soil for it and it should be sweet
sorry about my opinion not being able to understand
cheers dean

we are moving into autumn now now so I wouldn't worry too much about the damage --I would spray it twice( one week apart) with a diluted pyrethrum spray- this should slow down bug activity until the leaves get autumn colour and drop off----If your worried about fungus collect all leaves as they fall and put them in the bin- and a light fertilising could also help.then prepare a decent potting mix ready for early spring

Slightly off topic but what's the dog doing in the background of the first pic? Whenever a dog's hunched over like that they're up to no good ;)

Looks like a few different things have had a bit of your leaves. Probably something bigger has chewed the edges of the leaves - could be grasshoppers, leafcutter bees or snails?? but probably not there now.
The silvery pattern on the back of the leaves looks like sucking bugs of some sort - mites?, thrips? hard to tell without seeing. Some are just about too small to see. The pyrethrum Guy suggested should deal with them for now. Give it a good feed now before leaves drop that will build strength for next year. Repotting is usually a good idea with purchased trees - often they have not been done for years; you then know when it was given fresh mix; and you never know how a tree in someone elses mix will respond to you watering, climate, etc.
Repot in late winter into good bonsai mix, never soil but you've had bonsai for 7 years so already know that.

Hi Sahara, you will need to cut off that weird looking root when you repot next spring.
