Cherry Plum

Post by Fred »

Hi Folks

I would appreciate some suggestions on where to start on this Cherry Plum. It was dug up from under a massive mother tree, cut to about a quarter of it's original size and potted up. It is starting to leaf bud up.

Unfortunately all of the three main trunks have little movement and probably the younger two of the three are the only ones that would be able to be bent.

I have attached pictures of two sides.

Sorry it took so long to get a response Fred. :palm: Every tree has potential so we can look at it from that approach. The first thing is to cut them down more and induce some back budding down low. Cut them down to about 250mm tall, feed them and leave them in semi shade. Next year you will have a lot more selection to play with.

Hi Folks

Thanks for your replies. Funnily enough I had gathered together parts to make a branch bender before all these earthquakes started. Has anyone got any plans / dimensions for one?

I would be cutting it back, giving it heaps of food and sunlight and putting it aside for the growing season untill you have more to work with. When you have more branches you will have more choice for styling.
