Botanical nme: Ficus rubiginosa
Common name: Port Jackson Fig
Years in training: Started from seed 1992, Potted to a bonsai pot 2001
Size: Height 51 cm; Width 52 cm
Artist: Shibui, Victoria
This tree began as part of an Albury/Wodonga Club project in 1993. Each member was given several Ficus rubiginosa seedlings to grow and style. This one is the result of planting 2 seedings together and letting them grow freely in larger black pots then poly boxes with plenty of fertilizer and water. The smaller seedling was placed between 2 roots of the larger and has formed the basis of the smaller trunk.
It was finally potted up into a bonsai pot in 2001. Regular defoliation and trimming has produced reasonable ramification.
As this area experiences regular winter minimum temperatures below freezing the figs live all year round in an unheated poly house.
