demo juniper progresson

Post by hugh grant »

This juniper was worked on at the central coast bonsai society show on the 27.3.2011. it was my first demo so it wasnt the most intresting demonstation but the tree turned out very close to how i wanted it.
i received the tree in 2009 at our club raffle and then left it too grow untouched utill september 2010 when i gave it a repot and trimmed the roots as it was very rootbound and downsized the pot to a smller one. it was then left to grow still untill march 2011 when it was worked on.
before the day plucked some of the foliage and thinnened he branches. then dorig the demo i wired out nearly all the branches and the top half of the trunk. the new leader was wired more upright and compressed slightly. then the primary branches wired and poistioned and only a few of the secondary ramifivation branches were wired as we ran out of time and it would have taken much too long to do at the time.

only 3 branches were removed i ttal which were 3 primary bracnches that were too long on the first hanging branch. they will be converted to jin.

only the main branches like i said before have been positioned and also the bark has been cleaned to remove the flakey stuff to reveal the smooth redish bark underneath.
i am now in the process of thurther wiring and refining the styling so i will update when it is finished.

Nice, very nice. Has all the hallmarks of being a fine tree. You would have been under a little pressure during the demo. Well done

:gday: Hugh, great transformation mate :tu2:
If i may add my :2c: , above the first left branch ,the movement of the trunk doesn't seem quite right,,, i prefer the original sketch where it has more mellow movement leading into the apex,,
Thanks for sharing Hugh

thanks and i know what you mean by the back looking better in the picture. when i looked at te pictures too i thought it looked quite good. but its the whole photo problem, the back looks good in the photo but in the flesh its not very good and dosnt look at all the same.

totally missed that there had been replies :palm:
of course the tree has only just been styled so there will be improvements made as it develops more. but im happy with how the tree looks at the moment.
i do rather fancy the second front rather than the first, well in the picturs it dosnt look to great but in real life i think it looks better than the first.
ill work on getting a better photo like i said before, see if i can get it to look better photographed. i havnt got round to it yet as ive been out quite alot lately.

Hey Hugh. I think you done a great job with the juniper especially with the initial styling done wile giving a demo!!! I also like the second front that you selected. I think if you keep the front that you have now you should jin the lowest branch and remove and thin out some foilage on the second. I know your happy with the final styling for now but I also have a literati style juniper bonsai which I re-styled quite a few times and each time I thinned out and jinned a few branchs and now it looks more like literati. Also my instructor keept bugging me to remove more foliage to reflect the bunjin/literati style. Its up to you mate. I agree with what your saying about the pics you took, quite often your trees look better in real life than they do on film. Thanks so much for putting the progression series up on the forum, its inspired me to do the same... Cheers

Hey Hugh,

You like this posting thing, good to see.
Have to say thanks for having a go with the demo at our show good effort we all have to start somewhere.
Don't worry there will be plenty more chances for demos I will make sure of that, for a positive comment
just have to start talking a little more to get some flow and to get people asking questions keeps the demo moving.

All in all good job the tree is taking shape. Hands on thats what I like to see :tu:
