Air Layered Leptospermum Scorarium N.Z Tea Tree

Post by alpineart »

These are a couple of N.Z Tea Tree layers that were set some time back :?:

I removed them and potted up into bonsai pots to enable a nice flat root mass to be produced .

With a quick trim and wire they have became good trainers .

Allowed to grow on and i see how they go .Not much info on this species so its hit and miss .What i have read is they dont like root disturbance , these were tortured before i found the info . The root mass was complete in the layering pots so they layer easily .I have intentions of setting another dozen layers on the same tree .The layer material was 70 % red scoria and 25 % spagnum moss .I have used the same medium to layer Japanese Maples and Pines now trialing it on Spruce as well as Crepe Myrtle . Nice starters Alpine :-)

I think that if a Tree will layer OK, then the roots must be able to cope with Reasonable treatment as well.

Hi KC , i think along the same lines , i know the native tea tree's can take a beating as we used to clear it way back when and it would sprout in heaps/ wind-rows .I will certainly not be treating these with kid gloves , if they cant handle what i throw at them then it compost for sure .Cheers Alpine
