Sphagnum Moss

Hey everyone,

I was searching for bonsai videos on youtube and I came across this guy:

Who is suggesting that you should use 100% Sphagnum Moss to grow your bonsai in.

So my question is, is this a good idea?

Either way I love the way he says it, In the one episode he can easily say Sphagnum Moss > 20 times

On one of his videos (he has over 300 so I couldn't find it at the moment), he does warn of the health dangers of sphagnum moss.

Pretty sure its number 12, however, I'm not sure that it would be anymore dangerous than regular potting mix?

Aren't they dangerous for the same reasons?

That really does sound pretty horrible, but I suspect the chances of anything bad happening are extremely rare. I wouldn't get overly paranoid about it.

Was there a recently discarded straight jacket in the background of this you tube video.
If it is good to use 100% why isn't half the world doing it and why does it have no real history.
Sphagnum moss is good as a add in to your mix and is good for growing orchids in, I think it would be too wet long term.
Sphagnum moss does have some antibiotic or antifungal chemicals that it produces but the bottom line is that the stuff is simply too expensive and hard to get due to environmental constraints which may not be a bad thing anyway

That would be interesting to see, I use it for Azalea at about 5-10% and sometimes as a mulch but would not put anything in pure Sphagnum.

I've never heard of 'sphagnum peat moss', just 'peat moss' and 'sphagnum moss'.

Ive seen a few of his "wonder sphagnum moss" videos. But if you take a look at his bonsai stands in the background of some of his vids, his bonsai are absolutely terrible. So maybe take his advise with a grain of salt.
