I acquired this Japanese black pine the other day and it has cones growing on it. At the base of the tree it has a seedling that has sprouted.
Any ideas would be appreciated
My question is what would be the best way to collect the seed without loosing to much. Going by the seedling in the pot the seed might have some potential of being viable. Advise needed for collecting seeds

Sorry to break the news Gents.. but here it is...you just need to wait 20-40 years.

Once a Japanese black pine reaches 20 or 40 years of age, it will begin to produce pine cones. These cones can be harvested in late September/early October before they open.

Re: Advise needed for collecting seeds
If the tree has cones which are still green and sappy, don't pick them off, wait till they go brown and woody, and showing signs of opening before you remove them. Once removed, a brown paper bag will suffice to keep the cones in till they have opened up and to catch the seeds. Judging from what the last post said about Sept/Oct for harvesting, the cones are not yet ready.
Good luck.
Good luck.
