Collected Callistemon Viminales

Post by kcpoole »

I had the opportunity to collect 2 trees from my nieces boyfriends house. His mum wanted to get rid of them as they were far too big for the garden and blocked the view.
I went and had a look at then thought yeah they are on the big side, btu she'll be OK.

Dug them both yesterday, and once out of the ground, I realised they are actually bloody big :palm:
Each one is about 12" ( 300mm) across at the soil line.
Oh well pot them up and see how they go, if the grow and look ok then i do not want them I can sell them to someone younger
The single trunk one just the tree i can just pick up on my own, but the multi trunk one is far too heavy.
In the pots I think 2 people will struggle to lift them :o
Hope Julie is feeling strong this arvo so I can move them to the growing spot?

They were out at windsor so called into Bonsai Environment to see what pot they had that they might fit in and he had one for the smaller tree for only $75

Grabbed that one but a pot for the bigfer will be $220 + so will leave that for the moment,
Went then to Ray's to get some potting mix as I cannot get to a shop that sells Diatomite till next week and that will be too long to wait
Asked ray if he had anything to put the big one in, and he said he some big tubs that will work

Got home as it went dark, so out them in the wheel berrow and Tub filled with Seasol overnight.

Trimmed and potted them up this arvo and here is the results.

I will let them recover and just go mad till next year in Spring then look at what they have to work with. During that time I will put wire on the branches if they need to give a reasonable shape to work with in the future :-)

Hi kcpoole,

the so called `pots`, look like left overs from the Snowtown Bank !!

Yes I know i have a black humour, but I suppose at least I have humour?

I am also a fan of the almost silicone carry all baskets from the BIG GREEN SHEED ( aka Bunnings)

They bend twist and shape themselves to any form, just ensure after potting, you create drainage holes.

Easily done with any sharp impliment !!

The beauty of the bags is two fold............

One, they take shape of the tree you put in them (Added bonus is that there are now two handles, one either side to assist a lift, afterall, we are talking large trees)

And two.......they are available in a variety of colours..................for the fashion consious, and also Diana Fisher...........for those who can remember her on the Inventors !!

Regards,

Paul.

Nice work KC, I would be buggerd after digging them out  Hope they come back well!
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.
