Annual Shibui dig [FULL]

Post by shibui »

For the last couple of years we have given a limited number of bonsai enthusiasts the opportunity to learn first hand the process of developing future bonsai in the ground.
You get to help with digging and pruning the field grown trees that need to be lifted this year. There will be time to look at and talk about the more advanced bonsai and meet some other enthusiasts.
We have about 150 trees ranging from 1 to 10 years old to dig - mostly trident maples but also japanese maples, chinese quince, olives and a few other assorted species.

This year's day is Saturday July 16, starting mid morning after the frost has thawed.

Numbers will be limited to 4 or 5 helpers. We provide lunch, shovels and pruning tools and plenty of trees to practice your digging and pruning skills. You provide enthusiasm and labour and go home with lots of practical advice and techniques and maybe a tree or 2.

Shibui bonsai is located at Yackandandah in north east victoria.

Anyone interested?

It's great to see such enthusiasm.
Thanks for the offers. Thats 5 enthusiastic helpers and as many as I can handle at one time.
Sorry to those who missed out on this year. I'll keep you posted on future opportunities.

We will try to get some pics this year KC. Usually I'm flat out keeping up with the workers but we will appoint an official photographer to document the event for posterity.
Not only do I get the trees out of the ground and the diggers an intensive course in field growing techniques. There's also lots of ideas exchanged and debated so I learn some new bonsai ideas to think about and experiment with and there is usually time to have a look at my bonsai and get some second opinions for improvements and ideas for further development - something those of us in the bush miss out on most of the time.

Hi Shibui and everybody,

I hope you guys will have a wonderful day, winter is good weather to be working outside.

Hi Shibui, given what I have read on the cone development thread, I hope you will have plenty of black pines to plan in the futures :)

Best regards.

Thanks Daviet,
I still have some seed from the old trees, a tray of seedlings left from last year and plenty of small pines from germination the last 3 years and before. Also quite a few cutting grown black pines so still plenty to play with. I will probably put another 20 or so in the growing beds this spring after lifting this years trees in July.
