Peach Virtual

Post by mtarros »

Hi,

Just got my self a Peach tree today and was thinking of air layering the top off.
I have tried to make a virtual design of what I was thinking of doing to it.

Also should I wire it up before I air layer it as it might be a bit quicker to get it all going?
I'm guessing an air layer now would take a bit longer to take.

Please let me know how the virtual design is.

I would like to see the rest of the tree but would suggest that it is too thin to consider an air layer.
If you like the shape of the top section think about an air layer in a couple of years, in the mean time this section will serve to thicken the lower trunk. You can wire up a new leader to be used in the future if you decide to proceed with the air layer.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Hi,

Sorry I posted it as a plum, it's a peach tree. :)

The rest of the tree is the same thickness and only has the one other branch that you can just see in the before picture, It is also grafted.
I was going to style it a bit and put it into a grow pot to thinken up.

Would it thinken up faster if I just put the whole tree into a grow pot or in the ground?

Greetings,
There may well be a graft low down, so be careful if you cut low.
I would not consider an air layer as the tree is too small.
Tip prune every branch and cut any leaves in half.
When the spring comes, or on Ekka Wednesday, re-pot and sort the roots out. You will probably find several roots doing laps of the pot.
At the re-pot cut every branch back to the last leaf, and plant the cuttings:= 6 new trees.
Now while it is cold, wire at least the lower 3 branches down. If you let the tree dry out for two or three days the branches will bend.
Peach tree branches set very hard, very early and break easily.
Don't let it get too tall and any branch that is pointing up is making the tree look young.
Happy bonsai,
Bruce.

Hi,

Thanks for that helpfull info I will be planting the cuttings to get more trees from it.

The base does have a graft and I dont think it's going to look good as anything.
I will have to take a pic of the whole tree as this is only the top part of the tree, It's taller than the council bins.

I was only planning to use this tree to get more smaller trees from it.
I'll hold off on doing the air layer and wire the branches down.

Hi,

Here is a pic of the whole tree.

I was thinking of spitting it into a couple of trees and then just planting then into grow pots to get bigger.

It seems to be very bendy at the moment so might wire it up and get the basic shape of each section that I wanted to air layer off.
This one is going to be a very long project. :)
