Collected Radiata #2

Last year I collected some Radiata pine described in this thread viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4876&hilit=radiata&start=45#p70120
And described one of the trees here, viewtopic.php?f=131&t=7125 and now did some more work on the other remaining one today

it is a straight boring trunk, about 40mm diameter and about 650mm tall.
I saw a picture of a pine styled in a similar fashion by one of the European based artists ( cannot remember who or find the original article), ages ago, and thought if I can get some shooting back along the trunk I could do a similar style with this one.

I pruned the top back hard and got a shoot about 1/2 way up which took off and looks good and strong, so ring barked above it and then wired the shoot to shape.

Today I carved the top of the trunk to make carved Jin and applied lime sulphur to preserve it.
Now only need to develop the branching and should look nice I hope

Yep, I plan to leave it just like it is with just the 1 branch with foliage on it

The impression is an old tree, that has had the top die off and mostly rotted away, and the only live part left is this one branch

Sounds good Ken. I would leave the branch develops freely for the rest of the growing season. Regarding the yellowing top, I recall that it happened to me as well, on a much smaller deadwood, it did fade away slowly.

Does the shari reach the ground? If it reached to the ground and was slightly spiraled it would look like a lightning strike. A tall thin tree like this is the type of tree subject to strikes in nature. It is the feeling i get from the shots. I wouldn't touch the tree for at least a year now though.

No the shari does not go down very far ( there is wire in the way) but that is a good idea tho.
I will not do anything else till next year as I want to develop the branch structure now

The yellow fades over a week as it dries out. I have found several light applications letting it dry white in between, can be better than one heavy.

Looking good mate, will be interesting to see how it develops.
