Mugo reduction
This Mugo was bought from Gibbs Nursery in Albury back in early 2008. It had been one of his display trees. Although it didn't have much going for it as a bonsai, except age, I parted with too many dollars and have been pondering how I was going to turn it into something presentable since.
Last year I tried to sell it but I think I was asking too much for it. As I am holidays I have visited a few of my projects and been pleased with the results.
My problem with this tree is the 300mm of straight trunk. Last night I thought about splitting the trunk so as to give it some tapper.
So with a chisel,2 pound lump hammer and 8mm wire I set about modifying.
I hope to finish the initial wiring tomorrow.

Re: Mugo reduction
I like this very much Peter,
Perhaps a little more angle next time it is repotted to bring the apex a fraction to the left but I think it is a wonderful re-design you have achieved

Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Re: Mugo reduction
I did a bit more work today. Getting close to my concept of the tree.

Re: Mugo reduction
Nice sketches Anthony,
It may take time and some creative carving to achieve the lower curves and the dead wood will always be there. Also that lower curve will always be a problem, It does give me a direction to take this tree in the future.
Thank you
Peter

Re: Mugo reduction
Update,
I am finding that it is taking a lot of wiring's before it sets into position.

Peter
