gday crew :D

well I am really getting some excitement going bout this comp! I reckon it is gonna be a cracker with a little bit of fierce but friendly competition which is good for everyone :D

I do have a question on this though in regards to the stock. as it has been stated only trunk chopping and root work previous to the entry is allowed. does this include root work for root over rock trees? as long as it hasnt had styling done to it?

I know this may seem like a grey area, but why I am asking is I have some corky bark elms that I have placed on rocks for the ROR style, but I havent done any work to the trees, ie. wiring etc.
if this is allowed I would like to enter one into the comp but will hold off for confirmation and clarification of this. it seems this is one part that has been missed a little.

cheers :D

Being relatively new to Bonsai (just started last year!) I was wondering if a Shohin has to be an upright style- hence the height stipulations. Or could it also be a cascade/semi cascade/windswept etc?

And if these are also ok- how do we measure the height? Eg with a semicascade does it matter how long the "cascade" part is?

G'day Neal,

In order to keep it simple, no previous styling can have been done.

G'day Chipper,

A shohin sized bonsai can be any style as long as it is less than 250mm tall from the top of the pot to the top of the tree.

Does this include the entrant too? If I make a sketch of my plans, am I able to post that up for discussion?

I think doing "your own "sketches your proposed design is fine but please try to limit the amount of influence you take from peoples advice/thoughts, it is your tree after all  Definately no doing Virts of other peoples trees at all ;)

O'K Mods , could a plaited / braided trunk be produced for this comp .I would have to plait it now before leaf out or would that be considered training . I would be using at least 30-40 , 1-2mm whips from 150mm to 350mm high , No wiring of branches/ shoots would take place until they actually form however a restraint wire would be place on the apex to ensure fusing takes place . Cheers Alpine

Sorry Alpine but a plaited / braided trunk is work other than trunk chopping and root work.
I'm sure with your extensive collection of tree's you will be able to come up with some other great material to work with.

Steven

AAARRRGGGHHHHH I have spent the last week going round my stock & fitting time & size & rules its a nightmare...

Steven,
A couple of quick questions.
Do I have to know what it is to be able to enter a tree? :palm:
Would a mixed landscape be considered shohin if the trees & other components were to scale?

Easy for you to say... have you picked your entries yet????
So many possibilities & so little time....

Oh mate..... Come round my place and grab something.... I'm probably in the same boat, I have a few to select from but none I can see prize winning results in. :)

Really have to get my butt into gear, my first entry... is.... let us say, a lil' bit on the toasty side. Took a big gamble with entry 1, so need something to back it up with.

Good luck mate. :D

I know hey Ken! I think it only adds to the excitement, you just don't know what's going to take leaf in the next growing season. It is definitely a hard time of the year, to pick what will show promise next season.

I have been looking at some of the massive fig cuttings I have viewtopic.php?f=133&t=4486&hilit=12+little+samurai, been planted in ground for year almost now. But hellava gamble as they are pretty raw. No ram, little branching, un-carved/hard to work trunks but they are due to kick this season. About 3 I worked, but the rest are raw stock 5year old cuttings still.
Regards, Mitchell.

Yeah thanks bud... like I need any more trees to choose from

I dont want to win (no hope there) but i would like to make a decent showing & its so hard trying to pick what will pump & what wont, repotting this year & most likely next it just adds...

Then size... I think I find something that could be workable & then start cutting back & adding growth it ends up too big or just not working in the time frame... At the other end some just need a couple years to thicken out before being worth looking at :( Think I will go dig one of the too big potensai today....
