Pond ceramic pot for watering Bonsai..
Hi all,
I have purchased a massive ceramic pond pot which I intend on putting fish in and to also water my bonsai with.
Has anyone done so and how well will Bonsai do with this water?? No filtration will be used, just some water plants and perhaps, 5 to 8 gold fish
Any input would be kindly appreciated
Kind regards,
Han

They will love it, I used to help a friend out in a nursery and all we used to use was pond water. Letting tap water sit for a day before use lets the chlorine evaporate out in a gaseous form.

G'day Han,
I regularly use pond water on my trees. Can't really say if it has helped them but it definitely hasn't hindered them. The only issue is if you scoop up some murky water in your watering can the holes in the rose can tend to get clogged.
Post a pic so we can see your new water pot.
Regards,
Steven

Re: Pond ceramic pot for watering Bonsai..
WOW..Steven,
I am so envious of your pond to use as water for Bonsai
I don't have many trees, but they are all quality so I thought I would get a big pond pot with some water plants, fish, and water them from that
Seeing I won't have any filtration, will the water produce toxins from the fish delivering wastes?? Will that be detrimental to the water quality for my Bonsai???
I intend to add, change water on a regular basis too
Any more tips, hints, secrets will be greatly absorbed lol
Cheers,
Han.

The fish will add some good nutrients for the trees I think.
I a also envious of the garden Steven. It must be very tranquil working out there.

Thanks for the input Jarrod, much appreciate your reassurance on this issue. Do you use tap water or mature water from rain, etc...

Re: Pond ceramic pot for watering Bonsai..
At the moment I use tap water because I have just moved into a house and have not yet put in a tank. I would prefer to use tank water but I have not seen any noticable difference since I started watering with tap water (I used to only use tank water)

Re: Pond ceramic pot for watering Bonsai..
Hi again Han,
Thanks for your nice comments about my pond.
In my opinion, aeration is important for both water quality and the health of your fish. Even though you will be topping up regularly, it won't take long for the water to become stagnant in summer.
You could set up a simple pump or do something more decorative like a bamboo water spout. Here is a picture of a small water feature I have in the front yard.
If you don't have power available, there are even solar powered pumps available.
Here is a picture of the top pond that I collect my water from. The aquatic plants help filter and aerate the water.
Apologies for the picture quality, I just snapped them on my phone in between rain showers.
Regards,
Steven

I did not know there was such things as solar powered filtration systems !!! Must look into that soon when I can. Thanks for that Steven
