Planting seeds from pine cone

Post by Anth »

Found a beautiful tree today, possibly a blue cedar but was at night and couldn't see the colour so well. I pulled a pine cone off it and it fell apart in my hand and I noticed seeds in it. I took the seeds and pulled another one cone off and took them home with the idea of planting the seeds. Is there a certain time that the seeds are ready to germinate and how do i know if they are developed enough to plant in a pot? Any advice or tips on what I should do now?

Check out this wiki page on GRowing from seed

Plant in a seed tray in propagating sand / Mix and keep warm.
Should be OK now to sow

Cedrus seeds are ripe when the cones fall apart as you described. Just sow the seeds in seed raising mix or even normal potting mix. Cover the seed about 1/2 cm. They should show up in a few weeks at this time of year.

I planted half of them in seed raising mix , in seed tray the is on top of a tub of water that I put a aquarium heater in to keep them warm. I'm not sure if that's a good idea because of the humidity that's why I only sowed half of them. Kept the other half just in case. Will let you all know how it goes.
