Hi Guys
I have been watching on with disbelief as this subject gains momentum :palm:

I think the easiest way to explain is cutting anywhere with anything is OK, but NO use of wire. No wiring by you or a previous owner.

Simple ?

Tony

Hi,

have to find a replacement for my Azalea as it's been rejected :(

I have a couple but wanted to check if they will be ok, like the Azalea non have been wired before.

I was thinking of the loropetalum and would need to to cut it back alot and put it on a different angle but not too sure if it kill it.

Thanks
Michael

Ha ha, bloody hell! :palm: what a balls up!
Surely some people could have found a Yamadori or a plant from a nursery in the last month!
Some people here should be lawyers working in the family court.

Just my :2c: and observation
Let's just get on with it and stop making it hard!

Yea the loropetalum looks nice when it's full of flowers.

I have another one and it trunk and branches are just perfect, took it to a bonsai class and everyone was like oo what that. :)
Not too sure what I would do with that one if I entered it.

Might just enter that one it will be fun to find out how it goes with a hard chop.

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with asking questions. Is it that hard to believe a trunk chop involves wiring the new leader into position when the rule does not stipulate that wire can't have been used. I was under the impression that repotting could not be done at the moment. But that was from very vague replies so thank you for clearing both of those up.

Guess this pine sapling that has only had the trunk shaped by wire is out of the question. :palm: :tounge:

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Simple but incorrect, look at mtarros's disqualified azalea.

I am wrong it appears so I apologize, to all for my wrong interpretation of the rule. Apparently if it has had wire on at any time, before the trunk Chop it is not allowed. Even though after the trunk chop no wire has been put on it.

So as I do not understand the simple :palm:  :lost: rules. I am glad I am not bothering.

Again I do apologize for my misleading interpritation of the rules. :lost: :palm:

Hi Michael,
If you want something that branches well and has a good chance of giving you a presentable shohin in 14 months, go for the Buxus harlandfi as nr 1, or for the Callistemon. You can always try the Loropetalum (common name: Fringe flower) for fun besides. A friend of mine has a very nice Loropetalum bonsai, only it's a large one, and copious branching doesn't seem to be a feature of it.

Lisa

Sorry, just saw that I'm too late with my advice, you've already entered the Loropetalum. Well, good luck, and have fun!

Mm I was going to do the buxus but was not too sure and ended up picking the loropetalum as you don't see them posted on the forum much.

Plus it will let me find out what I can do with them with out killing my good one that I have done very little work on.
Not sure how they will react to a root prune?

I haven finished a tree off yet so this comp should be fun. Can't wait to get started and to see what everyone does.

Hi again, Michael,
Never mind the Loropetalum probably having a lesser chance than a Buxus, I'd like to compliment you on deciding to choose a tree that was less known and much less popular. That's the stuff that makes a competition like this one fun!!
You're in Brisbane, so no interrupted growing cycle in Winter, whch will surely help your tree to branch out.
I also entered a less popular tree, just for the fun of the challenge, as it doesn't have the slightest chance of coming out on top. Besides, mine goes dormant for 4 months oout of the 14!!

Hmmm... Perhaps I should join the nitpickers who have issues with the competition rules and ask for extra time for the participants who live South of Sydney?? :D :D :D :D :D

the original finish was going to be August, till I bent the arm of the Comp planners and suggested to make it later. I already got you and extra 2 months :-)

In regards to branch pruning, I've read trees are not allowed where a tree has been pruned to shape.
Is it acceptable to enter a tree that has been collected and branches have been cut off for its health/recovery?
Or when it has been cut back to fit into a backpack while hiking or to fit into the car after collection?

Hi Crowie, collected trees are allowed so you should be fine mate.
