[bretts] Parrotia
Species: Parrotia
Original height of stock: 300mm
This is an airlayer of a stock tree bought from Don Delucca for $100 the other half is in the ground so I guess we could say this part cost $50
It was seperated last year and was now root bound and ready for a bigger pot. Noticed the buds where starting to open today while searching for my last entry so after a good look decided to give this a go.
I know Don gets great results from this species but this is my first one so not sure how this will go but looking forward to doing some carving on it.

Re: [bretts] Parrotia
Craig, Parrotia persica is the Persian Ironwood and would absolutely thrive in your hot dry climate in Perth. I would be very surprised if there aren't a few bonsai enthusiasts growing them over west.
Cheers,
Mojo

Re: [bretts] Parrotia
I am not expecting too much from this tree by the end of the comp but it is starting to really get going now.
I guess a defoliation trunk chop and a bit of wire would not hurt in the near future.

Re: [bretts] Parrotia
I decided to go ahead with the defoliation trunk chop wire and I also did a little carving. I am thinking of tilting it to the left

Ahhh, the old 'defoliation, trunk chop, wire, carve and tilt' technique.Bretts wrote:I decided to go ahead with the defoliation trunk chop wire and I also did a little carving. I am thinking of tilting it to the left

Re: [bretts] Parrotia
This responded a little too well as the wire had started to cut in and I had to take that off today so I took a picture as well.

This little smarty is ignoring the bitterly cold nights and still storing away lots of energy
