i also really like that lower branch, i think it deinfintiely makes a STRONG tree, but it is almost, ALMOST out of place, but i think in time with trunk thickening it will come into its own and be more in proportion with the rest of the tree.

Love the styling on this tree Jarryd. I also like the virt but the tree as you see it now is different and unique. I think it will only get better with age.

Very nice tree for such a short time, if I new how to do a virt i'd like to see your's hanging of the side of a nice big rock!!, I do like both & thats the good thing about Bonsai everybody see something deffrent.

John that is a great tree, everything i see you post is of an extremely high quality and this is no different. looks like a great tree. have you had any luck getting the tree to produce a nice canopy of scale foliage?

i can understand your statement about 1 tree to many, my fingers had needles in them for weeks after this styling!

hey paul, I have been growing pretty much all of my bonsai in 100% diatomite for the few years and all are very happy. however i haven't been able to purchase diatomite for a while now. so i need to find a new source for next spring.

Id love to hear everyones thoughts on a suitable pot. this one is close but a bit big and not quite right.

I see you're in Lismore.... I bought a couple of bags of Mt. Sylvia Diatomite from Lismore Rural Buying for about $17 bucks a 25kg bag around December. didn't appear to be any shortage by the look of the stock in the racks. I've been using it 100%, as well as in combination with my regular mixes and all are growing beautifully.

I have been bit sceptical about mt sylvia diatomite, i have heard the ph is a bit harsher then what maidenwell was, although it looks like i will have to give it a go, its good to hear you have been using it with good results. rural buying is not far from home at all so thats great!

The pH of Mt Sylvia is much the same as maidenwell, if not identical. My teacher did some tests, after also believe that it was not useable, and find little difference at all. Apparently the first ever batch mine was very high in salt content, but ever since then it has been neutral. I have been using it for a couple of years on literally EVERYTHING i have repotted. Azaleas, maples, junipers, pines, swampies, bougies, figs, elms.. And everything I can’t remember off hand too Never had a prob. I haven’t done any 100% diatomite yet, but all AT LEAST 50%. That’s just my experience

good to hear another positive report, so good to hear that it has the all clear!! i use 100% diatomite for almost all my trees with great success so i am happy to hear i can continue the practice.

looks like i will start collecting some wild stock again this spring then, now i have a decent source for soil again.
