Hi Watto, as requested this tree has not missed a beat. It has roared back into leaf and given me lots of new budding. I hope a bright future, as i continue to compact this tree more.

OK, its official - I'm jealous! I took a few photos of mine today (part of the progression) and it is about half way to full flower.
It is interesting that yours has flowered, been defoliated and has shot so that would put me about 4 weeks behind you "weather wise". At that rate I probably would'nt be game to defoliate after flowering as the cold weather would start too soon for the tree to properly recover.
Thanks for the photo, it looks better naked I think? Its kind of you to keep me up-dated, that helps keep the grey matter working.

We are 3 1/2 years into this tree since collection and Spring this year it had two flushes of flowering. Both were cut off and i did a late defoliation. It is ramifying at a good rate and is very rewarding as a Bonsai candidate. If it keeps this pace of growth it will be a nice tree in another 4 years. Thats 7 1/2 years to produce an admirable Tree. I would recommend these as an EXCELLENT bonsai candidate, but not to be shown when flowering as the flowers extend way to much. Good Autumn colour also. Its a 'YES' from me.

Wonderful stock and great progression. Excellent tree. I have one that I have been working on this summer and I agree it is a fantastic species for quick results. However all of the leaves on my one are still green despite its full-sized mother tree being in full autumn colour. Did you defoliate this tree yourself or wait for natural leaf fall?

I have tried to find photos of a VERY advanced tree and have not been able to. Maybe a newer discovery for Bonsai?

This is a picture after natural leaf fall but the respond to defoliation very well. Still learning about the tree though.

if I squint and look ,the left trunk starts a bit too high ;(if it were mine) i would air layer the right or left main trunk

Would it be ok to major prune and root prune one of these this winter? I've heard that they are bomb proof!

No tree is bomb proof but they do tolerate major disturbance The only thing to watch for, so far, in my experience is that very fine twigs are prone to snapping and it is hard to tell if a fine twig is dead....or not. i would wait until late August, just before the tree comes out of dormancy.
