It's hard to doubt the fact this is a troll, but the good news from my perspective is there was plenty of sage advice from others on this forum that resulted in a bit of handy info for myself. So, I thank the troll for their input... I am now wiser on where to source wire etc. in Melbourne. Much appreciated.

Re online supplies, I do not even bother looking as I have a Real Bonsai Nursery not very far away from me ( 20 minutes).
Even if his prices were slightly more I will still buy from him because i can see and feeel the stock before buying, and if I do not support him, then when he goes out of business I may not be able to.

Well said mate, supporting our locals should be our top priority in Bonsai. Theres a good reason why some of us will travel an hour or two to visit our favorite nursery.

Mr Masakuni (Yes The Masakuni) gave us a talk on tools and sharpening and upkeep of tools.

Firstly buy good quality tools as they will last a long time because you can sharpen them effectively..

If you buy Stainless steel tools only buy the best you can afford; you are better off with good carbon steel rather than cheap stainless steel as the steel is not as good in the lower price range of stainless..

Sharpen while the tools are sharp; don't wait till they are blunt.

Etc. He covered quite a few topics.

IMO Be careful where and what you buy; make sure the quality is OK and that you can get some redress if the wire is unsatisfactory(too stiff, too soft, unevenly annealed) or if the stainless steel tools have turned black for instance etc. I have heard of one international supplier selling crap.

I only have 2 Masakuni tools but am inclined to spend the money on good tools rather than hunting for the cheapest price.

I would love to buy from a 'local' nursery, not just to keep them in business but for all the advice and assistance (read support circle) they offer. Unfortunately the nearest is 2000Ks away... so I tend to have to go online. Unless I visit.

RE: tools- once you have a basic set, then you can add to it with more expensive tool as your experience grows, so will the quality and quantity of tools... That's how I look at it
Anyway, with experience we will learn that good tools are half the job and recycling isn't always saving!

Re tools. I'm of the opinion that, for noobs at least, all that is needed is a basic set of 2 or 3 good quality tools. I bought 5-6 tools in my haste to become bonsai proficient and haven't used about half of them, or prefer to use $2 specials from my tool box. Sometimes a tool is a tool is a ...

I get most of my stuff online to be honest

My tools are all from japan (kaneshin all the way ), and i get my wire on ebay... which I think is actually from a nursery over east. I don't have a license, so my options are limited It does work out cheaper to get it from a nursery though, shipping isn't what i'd call cheap, but then i usually get a pot or two as well to make it worth it
Stock is another thing, I'd only get that from a nursery, I need to see it and feel it before I commit to buying it

Hey so sorry to have offended the bulk of ausbonsai didn't mean to. Me and the boys I know just have a darker sense of humour then most and I thought it was a Bonsai boy thing guess not very serious crowd here. Anyway I found out a mate of mine can hook me up with some pretty sweet deals here in Melbourne cheapest he can go is $4 on a full roll of wire. again sorry for offending the people of this fine forum I think I'll just keep to lurking for a while yet sensei.

No offence was taken. When you say you have a darker sense of humour, that is one thing. But saying you are a member of an anti-bonsai club, and your favourite species is anti-bonsai..... is just.... kind of immature and not really humorous.

Perhaps you are young and your humour will age like a bonsai...or not. But I would suggest watching something like 'Black Adder' or 'Monty Python' if you indeed pride yourself on darker humour. Tim Minchin might also be able to give you some directional pointers.

Learnt this the hard way... all my 'bargain price' tools have all bent or broken within a few months of using them!
