G'day,

This guy was trimmed and repotted just last night. I was waiting for the weather to warm up and left it until the last minute.
There's still a lot of development to go. Foliage on the first branch needs to be developed, the rest of the branches need thinning then wiring for shape and the apex needs definition.
Like the juniper, when repotted it sat 5mm over the 250mm limit so I had to cut the apex back last night.

Great to see your progression posts on these Casuarina.
I took particular interest in the fact that this one, after looking like it kicked the bucket, return to life. I have a couple of forest plantings, one Black Sheoak and a recent planting of Torulosa. I had lost 2 out of my forest planting that didn't take and replaced them this year. Having planted the new Torulosa forest just recently, one in the back is starting to look like its also dying. I was quite disappointed as it was a really nice little specimen. Having read your post gives me hope and that perhaps, even though they look completely dead, they may return from the brink... Any ideas in helping recovery - I was thinking of just seasol'ing it often and avoid fertilizer until I see some movement..

I think I might need to withdraw this one as it is slightly over 250mm now and I don't think I'll be able to lower it without doing something really drastic

Thanks. Yes it can. Best to do it at the beginning of a growing season and make sure it is healthy.

Thanks Steven....it's got me buggered how you choose which needle/leaf/branch to pluck as their all one and the same they should be colour coded....green=leaf brown=branch

All needles MAY become a branch, but they don't ALL become branches.

If you want to selectively choose which branches to keep/remove, the formation of a secondary needle on the main needle, means that main needle has become a branch.

Cut back the branches you don't want. But bare in mind that if you only leave one needle coming off of the branch, (and you are hoping this one needle becomes a branch itself), this is not a good idea, as it may not necessarily become a branch and this should be kept in mind when you are cutting back to form the desired structure.

In other words once a needle itself has needles coming off of it, then it has become a branch.
