Some simply amazing trees you got to see there, you’ve made me even more excited for my trip over to japan in March than I already was. I’ll hopefully get to a few of the big nurseries while I’m there if not to kokufu!

The blossoms are coming ... there were a few just beginning to poke through. In full bloom it'll look pretty spectacular!

Thanks for posting the pictures Ryceman3. I have been fascinated with the cycad since I started seeing pictures of it and that white pine assent (last Pic you posted) is ridiculous.

I’m crossing everything that I get to see some good blossoms while I’m there. I love those Chojubai you posted especially, I would be happy to ever have one 1/10th as good as those.

Yeah, here you go ... in many respects it's almost as impressive a spectacle as the exhibition itself!
So lucky that quarantine prevents trees into Australia. It takes away the stress of looking for a tree to bring back and lets you just enjoy what is on show. Of course, there are pots etc... to consider.

You certainly could bring trees back if you had the time, money and inclination to bang your head against the brick wall that is the Department of Agriculture for long enough.

You used to be able to just buy a tree, bring it back carry on, declare it as you go through customs and begin the process when you landed. Now though the government needs to have rummaged around the innermost recesses of your bank account and traded you some pieces of paper for the pleasure before you bring the tree in. Then you get charged by the square m for space in quarantine, also charged by the week i think, also charged for any time spent by any personnel interacting in any way with your entry (the plant or paperwork). Minimum is 3 months but for some plant material it can be as much as 3 years i have heard. It's just so expensive and time consuming that it may as well be illegal.

I have to say the week I spent with wrcmad and the folk from up North was just a wonderful bonsai experience. I was made to feel welcome by the whole group and while we spent 2 days at the Kokufu Bonsai Exhibition itself, we also filled our "bonsai boots" with trips to Omiya and Kobayashi's Shunkaen Bonsai Museum. All outstanding experiences I got to share with some fantastic people.
So, a massive thankyou to wrcmad and his bonsai crew for allowing me to infiltrate your Japan experience. I hope you enjoyed having me tag along as much as I enjoyed tagging along with you all!

I have just returned home today (after an extended stay in Japan to spend some time with my better-half).

Ryceman, you are welcome anytime!
Of the several trips I have done, that was the best yet.
A fantastic bunch of people, with a good sense of humour, and a great sense of adventure.
So many authentic experiences and a massive amount of laughs.

Omiya, Kokufu, the Kokufu sales tables, and then Kobayashi - topped off by a group invitation to sit down at the Shunkaen museum with Kobayashi himself, for a cup of tea, while he answered any questions and signed any books - truly unique to the trips I have done before.

I hope to do more of these trips in the future, and if this one was anything to go by... they will be an absolute blast!

Agreed wholeheartedly, the entire trip was a blast from go to woe, and so much unexpected stuff thrown in to just elevate the experience... Like tea with Mr Kobayashi, the lift at the Green Club sales area (yep, there’s more up here), double day tickets to Kokufu, great weather, beer vending machines, even a couple of cherry blossoms ... and...
horse tongue sashimi anyone? (clearly optional!)
