Kokufu 2020

Post by Ryceman3 »

Sometimes you get an offer you just can't refuse. I was minding my own business in July last year when I was contacted by wrcmad from this forum who was organising a trip to Kokufu with his club and was wondering if I was interested. :o :tu2:
After a bit of deliberation and discussion with my wife I decided that you have to take opportunities when they arise and so I confirmed myself as a starter.
I have to say the week I spent with wrcmad and the folk from up North was just a wonderful bonsai experience. I was made to feel welcome by the whole group and while we spent 2 days at the Kokufu Bonsai Exhibition itself, we also filled our "bonsai boots" with trips to Omiya and Kobayashi's Shunkaen Bonsai Museum. All outstanding experiences I got to share with some fantastic people.
So, a massive thankyou to wrcmad and his bonsai crew for allowing me to infiltrate your Japan experience. I hope you enjoyed having me tag along as much as I enjoyed tagging along with you all!
Anyway, back to the subject of this thread ... Kokufu 2020. A MASSIVE exhibition that is a big highlight of the world bonsai calender. So big in fact, it is run over 2 sessions ... mid way through there is a change over day. The trees from Session 1 are swapped out for a whole new set for Session 2, and we go through the exhibition again! All in all, over 500 trees of exceptional quality. Exceptional QUALITY!
The trees attached below are from Session 1. The quality in the application of technique to produce the trees and the effort and meticulousness that goes into presenting them for display really needs to be seen first hand to be believed, but here are some photos nonetheless. I'll post up more as I go through the shots I have. I will say the lighting in the exhibition is pretty challenging, I did my best ... if anybody else has shots they want to add in, be my guest!

The 2 photos attached to this post are from a Shimpaku juniper that is in the personal collection of the Japanese Imperial Palace and so have rarely (never?) been on public exhibition ...

It is with much envy and a touch of jealousy that I read this post Ryan. I too considered this trip but alas, the timing and my personal situation was not quite right. Perhaps another year. What an amazing experience you and the other crew must have had - not just for the incredible bonsai but for the friendships forged too. Wonderful update. Cheers, Mark

If you get the chance I recommend it for sure, for all of the reasons you list above ... and for the beer, the japanese have great beer - I tasted quite a bit of it!

Some very nice trees. The very first one is my firm favourite but I also love the shimpaku in your last set of pics. The cycad is fascinating.
Unfortunately I find all the pines shown in Japan these days very boring. :(
Thanks for posting.
(BTW the cotoneaster is a hawthorn)

That first maple was very nice indeed (not quite as manicured) ... and YES, it is a hawthorn, I couldn't quite remember and I didn't have the list with me so I took a stab, I even looked it up to see if there are deciduous cotoneasters and found one with very similar fruit so figured I was onto it, but yes ... hawthorn it is... thanks!
As for the pines - I could look at them all day, but I get it - each to their own.

Some simply amazing trees you got to see there, you’ve made me even more excited for my trip over to japan in March than I already was. I’ll hopefully get to a few of the big nurseries while I’m there if not to kokufu!

... and lastly, the shohin displays which I think had the worst lighting for photography but were INCREDIBLY impressive little trees, each in their own right was outstanding but in their display stands as a group they were absolutely mind blowing.

and with shohin displays of that calibre - what do you accent them with?? Well, stuff like this ...

That's it for Session 1. Hope you enjoyed.
