Mine aren't as developed as you guys but I think this is an example of a good process on this casurina in the still early stages.

Your casuarina is a credit to you Brett its looking great. You just need to be careful to have a very clear delineation between the main branch line and the sub-branches. This is one of the mistakes I made earlier in my life bringing out the branches with 2 or more main branch-lines, eventually when I learnt I had to remove one of the main branch-lines and re-grow sub-branches. It is so cold here I am sure its going to snow later, I tried to work outside and had to keep coming in to run my hands under the hot tap.

g'day Graeme, it didn't last long, if you subtract 15 from 17 then thats what we have today, 17 sounds balmy to me.

Loving the pics of single branches. Will see what I can find!

I read the first post of this thread yesterday and felt all gloomy, for some reason or another, thought I'd wait a while before returning. And what a SURPRISE!!!!. This has turned into a wonderful thread, thanks everyone. Will post up some branches, I haven't got any photo's at the moment, so will make an effort in the morning.

Excellent thread everyone. This is precisely the kind of discussion I need to read at the moment. I've always thought that I'd been cutting back too hard on my branches, but maybe not???

Theres no such thing as cutting back too hard when it comes to Bonsai ;)

On the subject of movement, Nanna used to always tell us, "If a branch or trunk moves more than one inch without movement it is wrong". A good thought to keep in mind. (Obviously a Formal Upright is the exception ;) )

There is no doubt that cutting back is good practice when developing branches but you do need to let them grow a bit in between pruning.

Yes Mojo that sums it up perfectly, there are also a few conifers which love this climate, also because our climate is not too extreme we are able to grow a some of sub tropicals and of course natives.
