That 3rd pic of the tree in the colander looks like no Lomandra I've ever seen, get the feeling it hijacked a pot!, I like the dramatic wiring on it though - would love to see how this goes in a few years... Nice!

The fig tree is he only surviving member of my menagerie of plants last year!
I'm not a big fan of ficus (sorry), but it will be a training ground for me on airlayering.
There are three sections that I have prepared, 2 of which will become Broome style trees and on will, God willing, become a cascade...
I love the nebarie on the base, it has a nice spread of roots which I'm looking forward to developing. Maybe ficus are growing on me. I don't have a clear picture of what to do with it with what's left over, but I can see why they're considered very suitable for beginners!

There's a basket next to the ficus which holds a M. Brakes (?spelling?) it's not looking very good - 1 of 5 that is unhealthy! You can see one of its brethren (3rd pic) which I'm styling into what I call a "Dragon tail" (romantic notion) top part is to be air layered off just after the first branch that curled to the left.
Eventually I'll replant it into the green colander... It's already got its roots in it but that'll have to wait until I do the airlayer ...

G'day Elmar . My door into bonsai was through my passion for salvaging junk and my background in horticulture (I worked in plant nurseries for nearly 20 years) . I scrounge all the tips in my region for stuff and I have been in horticulture since my teens .My original plans were combining the two. And even though I have a growing number of amazing bonsai pots I still love to make things that were once regarded to other people as rubbish into more . Your collection looks like it is starting to get there you just need another 50 trees . I am just starting to move out of the trunk growing stage on my journey in bonsai , I'm hoping to have some trees that I have grown show worthy in the next few years or so . I'm growing a lot of local species which I have had to start myself . Love your rock ,I have a few like that too

Hi Andrew . Great looking bench setup . Is that roofing iron for your gravel trays ? Do you let some of your trees roots 'escape ' into the gavel bed ?

Mate, you had me confused! Looked everywhere for where I might have written Lomandra... Until finally I saw the label!

The tree in the pot is a M. Bracteata (if only I could spell that correctly)... So, I saw a shadow of a Bonsai tree (semi cascade) in what I can only describe as a Dragons Tail!
So I'm trying to emulate that! The tree started of spindly and very tall so once I wired it more or less into the shape I wanted, I confounded and double backed and tightened the remainder into a clump, along the lines of "making great Bondai starters" (at least that's what I think the thread was called... Not sure if this will work, but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Thank Sno. It is roofing material made in a wavy shape with fiber cement. I created a small foundation for the cement blocks and then stack and packed them without cementing them in place. Through the top ones I ran lintels and then cross cut other lintels and lay the sheeting on those. It can therefore all be dismantled when/if I ever move. Bit of a job, but one day it will save me some twack. I don't intentionally let the roots grow into the bench, but it is inevitable with some of them and they seem to like it. I had a Ficus natalensis that did a bit of a Jumanji on me once into the gravel. Roots grew about 5 feet under the other pots before I noticed. What I do allow is other plants to seed into the bench and grow. I'm not big on clean and clinical benches. I think they lack character. But that's just me.

Tha ks for sharing your trees Reece, even though its only 1 wall it looks great. I also assume that whilst you're only allowed 1, you in theory can have as many tiers as you like right?

... I can see that wall getting higher in the not to distant future!!
