Or they haven't grown in as harsh an environment; the growth rings are not as tight and there is more flexibility.

The Koreshoffs brought red pine seed into Australia from Japan in 1950 and there was a forest of them down here in the ACT planted by Italian prisoners of war. Unfortunately it was lost in the fires of 2003.

Discussed this 'brittle' issue briefly with Grand during the demo. None of my JRPs have ever shown signs of being brittle either. Certainly interested to find out why this difference here. That also raises the question - What else might differ in Aust from experience in Japan and USA?

I have a red pine in the "growing on" stage
A year ago I was wiring a sacrifice branch to move it away from the other foliage. 1.5cm thick it broke off quite unexpectedly. I will be aware in future, as I have 3 purchased at the same time.
Don't assume you will be safe.

Having had to pull the pin on my attendance to this show, I'm just wondering, who took footage of all the demos, especially the international demonstrators?

I would like to watch some if possible, especially Ryan Neil's demo's.

Thank you everyone for the positive comments about the Australian Journey and thank you for coming and helping to make it a success.

Regarding Ryan and Australian native plants, I agree it would have been wonderful to see him work on some. We did provide Ryan with some information about Australian plants being used as bonsai material and sent him some great photos from the last symposium of Australian plants growing in harsh mountain and coastal terrain. Thor Beowulf took Ryan and Chelsea from Sydney to Canberra by the scenic route so Ryan was able to observe some growth patterns first hand. I am not sure whether Ryan actually had any hands-on experience before coming here and the only request we had from him for plants to work on was for pines or junipers. I decided not to risk giving him material he was not familiar with for demonstrations but I am glad he came across some in the workshops.

I am sure Ryan will be back, hopefully for a tour of several cities, so keep developing your native material. I have a great melaleuca in waiting.

As far as I am aware no video of demonstrations was allowed by the AABC

The Convention website has now been updated with a summary of the convention including galleries of the exhibition, Ryan Neil's demonstrations and many of the other activities of the Convention.

My mate and i did take video footage of the majority of the time Ryan demonstrated over both days, so once we compile the footage ill place the videos on my blog!

Thank god for that. I was hoping someone did at least some videos.

It would be absolutely pointless and crazy to hold a convention to further the knowledge and development of bonsai in Australia and not make that information available to the public in order to enhance the knowledge base if Australian bonsai.

I'm glad someone did some recording, and I'm putting it out there now, I think someone should organize the recording of all the presenters and "report" on the whole convention next time.
