Cheers Greg,
... here is another thread from bonsai tonight which looks at a tree that was exhibited this year (the 94th Kokufu), and was also in the first Kokufu which is pretty incredible. There is a lot of history here!

Who knew? Benjamin Button was actually an Ezo Spruce! A curious case indeed.

I have not seen this tree in the "bark", so my [un-educated] comment is that it looks approx. 86 years younger, then when it was originally first exhibited.
Has the acquired amount of foliage messed up it's original scale
I would agree that it looks younger now but only about 84 years. 86 is just going too far.
Can I re-post these 2 ezo spruces and my favorite pyracantha ever in the hopes of corrupting a few minds?
All grown by Kyuzo Murata. One of the few true masters who appreciated the value of restraint.

Love that first Spruce, 10/10 all day long. That second one looks a bit like something Michael Hagadorn would create, very nice composition indeed.

He died a few years back. He put out a book called ''four seasons of bonsai'' He ran the Imperial bonsai collection for many years. His work was not very well documented but you can find a few examples here and there.
You won't find big groomed and brash bold superstar bonsai though. Sadly his trees have declined in health after his death.

I have that book, and I have to say it's the one I look at more often than any other bonsai book I own

Thanks for the links, definitely nof "big groomed and brash bold superstar bonsai" ancient and weathered more aptly describes them. Particularly the flowering plums.
