Port Jackson Fig

Hi all, this is my first post!

Thought I'd attach a fig that started as a seedling. Its about 25cm from base to tip and has been in a pot all its life. just defoliated it and hoping to get some more ramification. Seems to be a slow grower compared to some of my other figs with coarser leaves?!

Anyhow let me know what you think.... bonsai are never finished!

yes grew it myself think I've had it for about 15 years ....just wish i had started more plants around this time!

defoliation - I just cut the leaf at the stem and let this drop off over time. (leave the weaker branches or smaller leaves)

...and yes there's plenty of inspiration on this site...just wish I had more room than a balcony...aghh apartment living!!

I like your fig. And I do not think it is little? The pot you have appears to be a Korean one? I have one with similar texture. It is nearly 50 cm long.

In Victoria, Port Jackson Figs have about six growing month. The other six they seem just to stay there looking green Although the Autumn and Winter just passed, some of mine younger put out feeble young shoots. They all survive so far.

Thanks... The pot is about 27cm long most of these type of pots come in two or three different sizes... Guess you must have one of the larger pots

Was wondering if you could tell me what the growing media is? Is that red stuff just for decoration? What is it?

The soil is a mix of akadama and a similar product, and a good free draining potting mix with slow release fertiliser. Bought it at bonsai south nursery in sydney. That's the red mix. It was what they had in supply at the time.

Just happened to find an old photo of this fig taken at the start of 2009. (didn't think I had any history shots - bit of a surprise to me!!) its a bit hard to see the branches as it is growing a bit wild... think i was trying to thicken up a few sections. The trunk and some of the branches have thickened in the last two years.

What a great improvement! You've inspired me to cut my JPF back, as now I can see what a difference it can make!
