Another Ulmus TURTLE BACK

Post by alpineart »

This is another unknown elm turtle back ,started as a project at the Albury -Wodonga Bonsai Club. This was quite a surprise when the mud was removed to find the knarled clump of roots which is basically how these grow . I planted it onto a concave granite slab

, however its way too small . I have a larger slab but it too heavy , so eventually it will go onto a Alpineart slab made a few years ago .

The original plan was altered as the main taller tree died of so its a matter of trimming back

, wiring and styling then sit back and in due coarse defoliate to build some ramification .

This has 2 possible fronts , tall tree's to the rear or front . Now i have quite a few of these one is around 500mm in diameter , still in the ground for developing thicker trunks , however the trap with this idea is on removal the tend to break up .I have periodically removed them with no ill effect just to make sure the don't get too comfortable were they are planted This will go back into the pond / Bonsai bath where it grows very comfortable. Well i had best go ad find some more mischief to get into .

Looks like an interesting project but what are you doing posting at 3:08am?

I notice you have some red wire on there. Is that electical solid core copper wire? Does the insulation help ease the impact on the tree or is it just a cheap source of wire?

Where do the Albury-Wodonga bonsai club meet and how often?

Hi Thomo , if you cant sleep at least do something constructive . I like the quiet time and uploading and posting here and on my blog is easier and quicker than during the day .

I notice you have some red wire on there. Is that electrical solid core copper wire? Does the insulation help ease the impact on the tree or is it just a cheap source of wire?

It is solid core 20 amp stripped of the white outer sheath , it does lessen the scarring and reduces bruising . Its cheap as i get it for free off building jobs .If i want solid copper i go see a few of the local Sparkies and get it from the recycle bins . Underground cable or keep a look out for old SEC aluminium power line wire .I have never used Bonsai wire well 1 peice about 250mm long , thought it was a bit soft must be for tender fingers.. I couldn't afford o buy several kilometers of wire to do Bonsai , way out of my budget.I use it the anneal it and re-use it , when its no good i send with my little bloke to the scrap metal dealer

The Club meets on the last Tuesday of every month , Contact Shibui via P.M here on Ausbonsi for further details .
