Hi mate, sometimes its not as easy as just popping down to the local creek to find driftwood, legally taking driftwood from a creek is the same as taking a sp. of fish, fauna or flora and there might be some discrepancies involved as far as parks and wildlife are concerned, in saying that i agree we have a lot of fish and aquatic inverts that need driftwood as shelter.

Best place would be any of the aquariums locally, at least then you can be certain that you wont harming the envrionment or potentially exposing your tree to harmful fungi or bacteria.

Good luck.

Ps: Is this for tanuki?

Hmm... debatable depending on the practices of the aquariums supplier.
However, one really good aspect is that they have usually presoaked and re-dried the driftwood removing salts and tanends.

Hi Daniel , driftwood while it is light it is usually very soft and weak . If you plan to use it for Phoenix Grafts or Tanuki , i would and do use old tree roots . Pine roots collected years after the tree's are felled usually contain only the resinous part of the root which is very strong and most of the softwood has decayed leaving a natural looking craftsman carved like finish , naturally done by Mother Nature . They just needs a clean up with a wire brush to remove any soft wood remaining .

A few weeks ago i discovered some great pieces of red gum roots from toppled tree's these have extremely good characteristics as they were from uprooted century old tree's grown in river wash / stones , which the Council allowed the locals to cut for fire wood , at a cost of course .Mind you it took 140 kph winds to bring them down , I collected the roots from the remaining stumps before the Council removes them to burn .The topic is "Red Gum Roots" Hope this helps .

Cheers Alpineart
