Turkey Oak - does anyone have one??

Post by Stewart_Toowoomba »

One of our club members brought to a recent meeting a lovely little oak which she described as a Turkey Oak. I got a cutting and it is still alive.... but i'll be waiting for years to get something from it.

Does anyone in the forum have this type of oak and could post some pics and advice and or experiences?

Also, could anyone one advise how one could obtain root stock or pre bonsai stock? Oaks seem to do quite well here in Toowoomba.

Thanks

Hey Stewart, I can't see any bonsai nurseries in Toowoomba in the wiki so I am sorry to say I have know idea how you could get some stock. Or you could try ringing around a few general nurseries to enquire about Turkey oak? I assume you asked the person you got the cutting from at your club how they obtained theirs?
I have what I am 99% sure is a turkey oak that I collected...well 2 actually, but they are in the early stages of work for future shohin. Collected late winter of 2010 and left to regenerate. Then at the start of spring 2011 I repotted them. One I also trunk chopped low for an eventual broom style at the repot (so not worth showing at the moment).
The other is nicer in my opinion. Will take a pic for you and post it soon.
Anyway, even though you are not supposed to bare root oaks, I did at this years repot and both are fine! They also collected very well too!
Take to pruning fine so far and generally seem really nice. I don't know about leaf reduction but the leaves aren't as large as some oak species I have seen and they are used for bonsai so they must be ok. They seem to grow pretty quickly too.
Good luck and sorry I can't be of more help mate.
Cheers, Dario.

Hi Dario and Craig

Thanks for the great information and photos :tu: - i now have even more passion to get my hands on one of these lovely trees! The photos are terrific Craig - You're the man! Dario - i hope to see your trees sometime in the future. I will talk to the club member in the next meeting and see if she can remember where she got it. They have such lovely bark and beautiful defined leaves, I amazed that they are not more popular. By recollection they are not all that fussy - the small cutting i got from the one at the club (not obtained subversively though! :shifty: ) is still alive and powering on after a few months.

Man i love this forum!
