Shaping a Ficus Ginseng

Post by avz10 »

I received this ficus on father's day last year. Looking at it now with another eye, I was wondering if it will scar badly if I try to get rid of the nasty angle. Has anyone got experience with this?

Something like this? Or is it to much?

And then seal the wound? I have read about Vaseline, cold glue mixed with fungicides and hormones, children's clay, and commercial products.

Hi avz10

I understand what you are trying to achieve and the last pic looks right. here is a clip on you tube that might help. :fc: Sorry i cant help any further.... but hopefully you will find this clip helpfull . P.S Shallow round pots complement this style of bulbus root fig really well I was reading that the shallower the pot for this species promotes thickness in the trunk/exposed root as the roots can only travel sideways forcing the trunk to expand.

Good luck

A few photos of what I have done. I was unsure about the sealant but melted cooking oil and candle wax and sealed the scars. The mixture is slightly sticky, but I think it will do the job.

Maybe think about layering just where the trunk begins to swell?

What will the benefit be? To propagate?
Will the "fat" trunk then form new stems and the top part?

Thanks!
