My Bougy Progression

Post by sharemyblessings »

Good Day Folks!

It was a week after new year 2012, when I was walking at my Mom's backyard this bougy really caught my attention. She was on a small pot sitting on a corner with a rotten trunk and dead branches. The first thing that pops in my mind is that this little bougy needs care and attention. Immediately cleaned the rotten trunk, removed the dead branches and re-potted it.

It's a great feeling that she started growing new shoots.

I did some minor carvings and deadwood refinements.

This is another bougainvillea specimen that I'm working with to be trained as informal upright bonsai. She was planted on the ground for about 3 years and dug it up last January 2012. A trunk diameter of approximately 7 inches and the trunk length is about 11 inches. Hope she grows more news shoots.

Do you treat the dead wood on your Bougies with anything
I have found the wood is very soft and rots quickly if not preserved

Yes Ken, it really does rot easily. I treat it with lime sulfur to prevent future decay and added some color pigments to the mix, because lime sulfur tend to produce a bony white effect. I should have applied some wood hardener but unfortunately I don't have it :(

This might help http://bongbonsai.blogspot.com/2012/02/ ... a-pre.html

Yah, I'm trying to get one also. Wood hardener really helps further decay. But 1 gal. can is the only one I found and I don't need that much at the moment. Trying to find smaller ones :)
