Advice On Why Is My Port Jackson Fig leaves yellowing?

Hi everyone,

I am seeking advice on a patient of mine.. the Port Jackson Fig forest that has leaves yellowing?

What would cause this and how can I prevent it so that my forest of PJs are flourishing?

Any tips and advice great appreciated!

Is there lots of leaves turning yellow or just a couple here and there?

If its just a few then this is common for PJF, you can defoliate (probably best off done a couple of months ago) which gives a fresh flush of new leaves.

If it is many then it may be getting over watered or not enough sun (they enjoy full sun, especially down here). If you are loosing lots of leaves it may have some root rot developing... is it in a free draining soil mix? how long since you repotted? Check the soil and see if it's over sodden. Is there black spots on the yellow leaves aswell?

If you suspect root rot its probably not too late in the season (anyone else confirm) to emergency repot into free draining mix, (from my experience) you will know if it does have root rot as the soil will have a fairly pungent smell when the trees out of the pot also the roots won't hold on to the soil well and may be starting to die off.

PJF are tough but they do hate over saturated soil mix.

Without photos it is really hard to diagnose. Rot is the number one enemy of figs usually caused by poor draining mix but I haven't experienced yellow leaves with it myself. Just need to see it first

Any idea how long since last repotting? I find with mine I get yellow leaves and twigs dieing back after more than a few years without repotting. May be related to nutrition or drainage as the mix decays and roots fill the spaces but after a repot and rootprune they shoot back with lots of lovely green leaves for a couple more years. Unfortunately, probably too late to repot now.
