Re: 3-7mm Scoria -Where can it be found
Hi,
About 8 weeks ago (today is 20/Nov/2008) I saw them in a Bunnings store. The lady told me they are Australian, but she was mistaken, the label on the bags say they are from China.
I saw about two sizes, but I cannot remember which. I think you should try your local Bunnings store?

Re: 3-7mm Scoria -Where can it be found
KC,
Here is where you get 3 to 7mm scoria in your area.
Follow these directions and you will have all the material you could ever need.
Buy yourself some 10mm scoria from a garden supply, should be around $7.00 per 20kg bag.
Take your booty home and empty it out onto a clean surface, eg concrete slab.
Place some timber (35 x 90mm pine) around it to keep it within a square metre or so.
Take a large mallet or tamper and proceed to crush it, (the timber will help you to contain the pieces).
Scoop up the crushed material, sieve and wash.
There you have it, of course if this is all too hard it may be easier to convince a mate or yourself to bring a trailer of bags of 3mm across the border
I hope this helps, I have done crushing for semi decomposed granite and it worked a treat. I have none left now so it may be time for another trip to the countryside.

Re: 3-7mm Scoria -Where can it be found
Hi Damien
I tried a test on some ages ago by hitting a few lumps with a hammer, but found it not break up readily at all. Al it wanted to do wand chip some flakes off the edge.
I then thought I might try laying it on the driveway and containing it like you said, and run over it with the car!. Never got around to it.
Still might have another go and see how it goes.
In the meantime I have just been using Maidenwell and Zeolite mixed 2:1

Don't bother running over it with the car, metal plate tamper or large mallet (sledge hammer will sort it out).

I have crushed with a hammer Kc no worries although it is alot of work.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Re: 3-7mm Scoria -Where can it be found
Hi Ken its available in 10mm minus in Abury NSW at the Rock Yard .I have tried in Vic but it is hard to locate a supplier for under 30 tonne loads . Most places sell 10mm Scoria screenings hard and soft or 10mm minus soft . I use 10mm minus $80 an tonne and sieve it through an 8mm sieve and a 2 mm sieve , then wash .I use the 2mm minus for my seed raising mix and the 8mm plus for top dressing or blend it into my large Yamadori mix. There is several types ,Soft red is the one i use ,Black or Black/red marble is very hard and shatters or chips like granite ,and it is not absorbent .Give The Rock Yard a call and ask them for a supplier closer to you .Cheerskcpoole wrote:Hi all

Re: 3-7mm Scoria -Where can it be found
Hi,
I just bought a 20 kg bag from Bunnings last week. Cost about $6.50. The bag labels it as Australian product.
Mixes sizes but we can sieve it out with a sieve. I think they are quite affordable.
Best regards.
