stamp under pot...

Post by paddles »

A quick question, talking to others last few weeks, something that came up was stamps under the pot.. were any cheaper pots stamped? I've tried to take a photo, and it really doesn't show up, it's fairly faint, but appears to be a square, with characters in it, and a 1 above it.

Hi paddles,
Put a piece of paper over the chop and color with a lead pencil.

just tried that... well with a crayon.. I'll try again with a pencil, I mean, I don't think it's worth a fortune or anything, but want to know if it's one that i want to be a little careful with it... I mean many pots around here get fairly rough treatment

Hey Paddles,

I'd say it is a mass produced slip-cast Japanese made pot, and that the 1 implies that it is part of a set of typically three or four pots identical in shape, but differing in size. Someone would have bought this pot as part of that set, and it has since been split up. It is probably worth a bit more than cheap Chinese pots, but I wouldn't class it as a valuable pot. That said, the value in a pot is in the eye of the holder, so if you really like it, then cherish it! Who cares what it costs right!

Cheers,

Andrew
