Re: TRADITIONAL PENJING STUDIES JUNE 2012!!
Hi Philippe,
Unfortunately I am in Melbourne and cannot participate in a course held in Sydney.
Recently I acquired a root over rock chinese elm which was part of the late Hong Lin's collection.
If it was conventional bonsai I would not hesitate to repot as It has obviosly been a very long time since it was potted.
It is my understanding that penjing should not be repotted too often.
Can you please give us some information about repotting penjing.

Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

It is a shame your not able to attend in Sydney. Perhaps in the future you would consider a weekend workshop at the Academy, since your in Melbourne?. It may be a worthwhile investment for you and your tree, perhaps even look at working on your tree if you indeed come up. Always good to meet new Friends

With regards to your recent Penjing Purchace. I can not fully advise you on Lin's Tree without seeing it. But if it has been done via-Traditonal Penjing Methods, in Particular to that of the South (as in China).
Then YES, your re-pot intervals a few and far in between.
Our Penjing of The Lingnan Penjing Academy of Australia as well as all students use Tradtional methods of soil preperations, and in doing so, re-potting is a rare occurrence.
5 and in some cases 15 years apart. As opposed to bonsai 1 year to 3 years.
The soil-biology componants is a major sequence in Lingnan Penjing. Not saying its not so for Bonsai and othyer variations, as it indeed is.
Rather, A complete detour from tradtional Bonsai soils. Implementing Chinese methods of "Bacteria-Timing". This is a major lesson for hardened Japanese Bonsai practioners within the Academy Ranks so used to various Bonsai soils. Most of the those who have been doing Bonsai for years, self taught or hardened club enthusiasts, at frist look on scatching thier heads

If you wish to ask some questions about your tree, feel free to do so on another thread I posted a while back specificly for Chinese Tradtional Penjing needs,
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9873&p=109823&hilit ... ng#p109823
I will do my best to answer questions you may have on it, but as I am very busy with teaching, (Term 3 about to comence) not too often on this site.
So apologies if there is a delay...
Adding, For more info on Penjing or tadtional methods you can join our facebook page,
