[WANTED]Acer palmatum stock (west of the rabbit proof fence)

Post by thoglette »

Another batch of seeds appears to be succumbing to white furry stuff during stratification. :-(

So I'm after non-grafted Acer P. seedlings or small stock by spring.

The catch is I'm west of the rabbit proof fence, so WA stock only due to state quarantine rules. Happy to get leads to nurseries or similar growing from seed/cuttings.

Any of the bonsai nurseries or clubs in Perth will have them. Ordinary nurseries aswell, I think the plain palmatums are ungrafted.

Hey mate,
How long have you had them stratifying? What do you have the seeds in to stratify them and what substrate are you using (eg sand or sphagnum etc)

From what I understand, seeds being stratified should still have air circulation. Either leave the zip-lock bag open, or seal the bag with all air expelled and then open the bags weekly to allow fresh air and then re-seal.

Would it be worth trying a fungicide on the seeds? Fingers crossed mine dont succumb to "white furry stuff" but then again, that's why I used charcoal & sterilised my charcoal and sphagnum in the microwave.

Plenty of air.

I've used "seedling mix". Last time I try that, I think. I have spag. moss and can get charcoal. Dario suggested giving them a rinse in 10:1 bleach mix to kill off the fluffy stuff.

Is the seedling mix wet, damp or moist? eg could you squeeze it and it would drip water? If so that is your problem. The substrate should only be slightly moist eg one or two sprays from a spray bottle should be fine. Also here is a progression of my seeds I am stratifying atm. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11622

I believe "moist" but I'll check. Probably not as dry as you suggest.
