Hi all,
Does any one know if this is some sort of Casuarina ?
This photo was taken at Harvey Bay Qld. There are heaps of these growing along the beach.
Sorry i don't have close ups of the foliage but it has a scale foliage similar to mature Junipers.
I think they would be great bonsai material with their foliage pad like growth habits.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Hey Sam,
It can be difficult to ID something even with good close ups of the foliage. From what I know of casuarina it is not one
It does have really nice clouds of foliage and the tall slender trunk shows it doesnt have to be thick or even have much taper to be beautiful. Great inspiration

It is a species of Callitris, probably Callitris colemellaris or Bribie Island Pine.

Great thanks for your help. I googld Bribie Island pine and it looks the same. Have you heard of these been used as bonsai. I'd love to give one a try.

Yes I tried them about 20 years ago. They didn't seem to respond as well to pinching out the new foliage as junipers do. they look great as old trees in the ground. there used to be many old specimens at the front of Burleigh School on the Gold Coast, Qld. I don't have any at the moment but would like to give them another go, as those deep green pads of foliage look great.
