Try asking some of the Filipino, Malaysian or Indonesian growers who post on "internet bonsai club"

Re: Mango as Bonsai
Hi all,
We have mangoes in mauritius [ not growing where I live, because it way too cold for them to bear fruits ]
I am trying to grow a longan bonsai as well as longan bonsai forest. [ I started up the bad way though
]
Anyway, from what I've experienced so far, It will takes ages if you start from a seed.
Even in real life it takes 5~7 years to bear fruits on the one planted for agricultural reasons.
It would be better to airlayer an already established tree, or better to hard prune a tree [ leaving enough branches and leaves of course ] and start of training the branches from then on.
I dont think the leaves will reduce much.
There is a whole field of mango / letchi trees here near the coast that's used for commercial purpose.
Those are pruned yearly after each fruit bearing season, but I've never noticed any significant reduction in leaves size.
Your taper will have to be thick enough to accompany the leaves size.

Re: Mango as Bonsai
I had mango seeds growing and they seemed to grow quick . As long as you feed it up over summer and watch it. Plant in full sun otherwise it'll go stalky.
I had grown these many times from seed and once put outside the 1st frost killed it.( wasnt growing for bonsai then) The trick is to open the shell of the seed, then put the seed in a glass of water filled halfway up the seed.Then put on a window sill where it can get light. Once the first set of leaves come out then put out in the ground where you dont get servere frosts as i do.ATM i have some avacardos growin in pots.But this season i will plant out. Growing in pots seems to slow them down. will post pics in the morning some time.

Thank you to everyone for your input into this subject ...I am still not convinced that leaf reduction can be achieved though
