Re: Nacho Marin's Callistamon
Thanks anttal63, That is an awesome tree. It is what I would consider an amazing example of a quality bonsai. It ticks all the right boxes for me

What a stunning use of Callistemon. Great overall structure, love the hollow and the branching, pot etc. Just noticed the seed pods, would love to have seen it in flower. Thanks for posting.

If it were not for my trees, maybe I could see the forest.

It is beautiful and is very well done and a credit to the owner but it certainly is not true to its character.

Re: Nacho Marin's Callistamon
It has a very fine trunk, and a strong arrangement of branches - to me it makes a good "bonsai" but it doesn't feel all that much like a Callistemon. Should it? Does it matter? What do Callistemons look like anyway? What is a strong shape for a Callistemon in the wild?
I'm in two minds. Well, maybe forty-seven.
Thanks for posting.

Re: Nacho Marin's Callistamon
Hi Guys, when i first viewed this tree I felt the same "it's not right for the species" thought, however I began thinking about Street trees(callistemons) which I have seen growing around Perth.
Callistemon viminalis is a weeping bottlebrush, and therefore this tree fits how it has been styled. The foliage has been styled with a sparse look to emphises the strong trunk which definately carries the weight for the flowers it would display.Maybe others would take slightly different approached if trying the same thing but Nacho IMO has created a Unique Bonsai and deserves all the accolades that come with it. Congrats, It's a beautiful Tree.

Thanks for the clarification Craig and the legwork to show us how they can grow, that is a weeper all right.

Re: Nacho Marin's Callistamon
It is very true to its character if you have seen the right variety in the right conditions. As soon as i am able i too will take some photo's of some bottle brushes around here that grow like this. Even more so than Craigs examples. closer to what Nacho has captured.bodhidharma wrote:It is beautiful and is very well done and a credit to the owner but it certainly is not true to its character.

Re: Nacho Marin's Callistamon
To truely appreciate it one must look at "how" Nacho has gone about it. Wiring for example is plentiful but the amount of movement through the sub-branching which he has applied is minimal, keeping with but highlighting the downwards growing habits of the branches.

Re: Nacho Marin's Callistamon
Interesting about the different reactions this tree invokes. Personally i think this tree looks beautiful. A very old , narly weeping bottlebrush .I grew heaps of this variety (for general nursery stock ) in the late 80s,so I am very comfortable with its weeping form.
