Taiwan Five Needle Pine

[Chiang Cheng Kooi]

I bought this neglected Taiwan Five Needle Pine (Pinus morrisonicola) from our local nursery. It is a type of white pine. It got thin and smooth twin trunk and the needle clump are sparse. Do the best I could; train it to literati, windswept twin trunk style. It had been 5 month in the bonsai pot.

I do not know anything about this species. Was it locally grown or imported from Taiwan?

How did you observe its growing pattern over there?

For me personally, you have styled it really pleasingly. When the time is ready, I think you will have to pick a more feminine pot for this tree.

There are groups of Vietnamese from the South who are growing their own black pines from seeds, which they get from a guy in the U.S.A., and some young, raw trees imported from Japan; they seem to do well in the tropics. I am guessing black pines would do well in Malaysia too.

Thanks you for your compliment. I had asked a Taiwan Bonsai Master thru Facebook, he said it does look like Taiwan Five Needles Pine.
Besides this pine, I also have tree black pine which has grown for about three years in tropical Malaysia. Two under grow training for two years n one about 6 month. Of cause I had kill a few prior to this because I am ignorant of their care.
All my pine is imported from Far East but I am not sure they are from Taiwan, Vietnam or China. A friend of mine does buy imported seed from oversea, and are successful in germinating them.
