Mugo Pine Dig
I had the opportunity to dig a Mugo Pine from a local garden and today was the day. Because it was growing in a garden bed there was little difficulty in removing it but there were not as many feeder roots as I had hoped, but beggers can't be choosers.
I took the opportunity to plant it straight into a bonsai pot and I have put it away for a couple of years to recover, and with luck it will survive.
It is a stumpy at 450mm tall with a butt of 150mm - it might be a mugo sumo?
Anyway here are a couple of pics.

Great score Watto
One question, did you reduce the top when collecting? Given it doesnt have as many feeders as you would like is there enough to support that volume of foliage until it gets roots underway....

Re: Mugo Pine Dig
The foliage had only a very light trim in places and the theory is that more foliage will induce more roots. I will let you know how that theory goes in a few months.
I am certainly no expert when it comes to pines so I have my fingers crossed.

Thanks Olive. I use seasol and I will give the regular misting a go too. It is tucked away from the harsh elements so I am wishing and hoping.

Re: Mugo Pine Dig
Thanks Antonio, if it lives, and of course I hope it does, it should be a candidate for a "proper" workshop in a few years. Although it has a broard nabari, the tree isn't too heavy so thats a plus.
I'm getting too old for all this digging.
