30+year old grafted JWP

Acquired this one June 2010. It had been left for lanscapes, neglected and lost. The roots had grown through the box into the ground. It had become very leggy. At the right price i was willing to have a crack and save it from becoming a landscape tree or worse still falling into the hands of the tall skinny tree people and becoming another Bunjin. I saw a small bud/ branchlet down low that gave me hope this tree could be glorious one day. So the deal was done, out came the saw so as to fit it in the car and home i went.

Once getting it home i further cleaned it up and waited for a repot. September spring came and out of that poly box it came. I was horrified to find that the root ball was so solid and the mud was so caked. I hosed and carefully scraped. Sparingly cut roots away. However i could not budge this root ball with out damage so i decided enough for this time, pot it up into a very open mix of 5 to 10 mm Diatamite/Pumice and next repot i'll have another go.

It has been a pain staking juggle to push back growth, keep the tree vigorous and save my bud down low. However i have done it so far. This year it was time for a repot again and this time i nailed it !!! The roots were far stronger and i was able to be more aggressive with it. A combo of strong teasing out with a butchers hook, chopping, soaking and hosing eventually saw the rootball emerge and bare. No more mud. Sexy one at that !!!

Hi Anttal63 , mate it will be good to see where you take this one . I know there is a few species/cultivars of JWP any idea which it could be . I have a couple of grafted JWP's , 1 with smooth bark "fuku-zu-mi" small shrub and 1 rough bark "Ibocan" taller tree . The smooth bark Fuku-zu mi is grafted onto smooth bark root stock probably White pine and the rough bark graft onto rough bark root stock possibly Black pine !!! Nice concealment of the graft should happen over the next few years or decade .

Do you plan to lower the base to promote more roots up the rough bark grafted root stock to conceal the union or leave it as it is . Nice Challenge , look forward to future posts on this one .

Will be good to see a progression on this one over the next few years.

Any reason you have not tried to graft on it yet as Jow suggested? or are you going to rely on back budding only?

I see a few new shoot close in but which one was your original bud? on the first branch, or up the trunk a little?

After 30 years im guessing this is the smooth bark grafted on a Black pine. Alot of these here in Melb back in the day and still a few around !!!

Are you serious Alpine ??? Bury this base in the ground to hide the union ??? No way pal !!! However if possible to conceal it in the styling fantastic, if not, it is what it is...
I too look forward to what it becomes, yes i have a plan but got a long way to go yet !!! Thanks mate...

Hi Jow Thats a definate however i was never gonna start any grafting until i got the bottom end right. Only then could i guarantee that this tree will really pick its skirt up and grow vigorously and not look back. This is what is needed to graft successfully. A healthy vigorous tree and also no need to repot for the next 3 years at least. So now i believe i have that scenario and will definately have a look at grafting over the next 12 months.

Ken as above the reply to jow and as soon as weather permits and someone to help i will photograph and show it now as well as outline the bud b4 and now. A considerable amount of back budding is going on and my bud is now powering but has been touch and go. Thanks pal !!!

Looking at the last photo, I feel the tree is in much better health than when you first got it? It has flowers too.

For me, the movement of the trunk is great too. You have already decided on the leader?

Some of the branches will need to be shortened, will you consider approach graft option for pine?

Hi Viet the leader i decided on when i purchased it is circled in red the next pic goes to show it now. It has grown considerably. In my design worse case scenario i dont need anything else to grow on the tree how ever it would certainly open up options to graft a new set of branches up and down the trunk. some of what is there is usable, some is just too thick and not exiting the trunk correctly. I do have plans to get together with a master grafter next year and look at it . Thanks mate !

Hi Ant , mate thanks for an update , has i back budded on the trunk/branches or just on the branches/shoots extending . I have he opportunity to collect a trunk with a base of 200-250mm , black pine root stock multi trunk 5-8 leaders i'm quite sure are Fuku-zu-mi mini white pine .Im sure its the same as this one

It has back budded a few on the trunk and branches . It has been a very slow process because the health of the tree needed attention 1st. Now that i have it repotted and the roots and soil doing what i want, i will begin to push it a little harder. May set some grafts this July / August. We shall see... PS> I look forward to seeing what you collect !!!
